Instructions for setting
SpeedStream Modems to Bridge mode

Please note: the Telstra self install kit does not support the following setup. Hence, modems set back to factory default settings will destroy the settings below.

In its current configuration set up for BigPond, the SpeedStream modem is not set up to host other servers on the user LAN side. To enable this feature, the PPPoE termination will need to be on the PC rather than the modem.

Instructions for making the necessary changes are set out below:

6520 Modem set-up:

  • Reset the modem to its factory default settings
  • Type the modem’s URL into the Internet browser (address bar in Internet Explorer), Note: You need to determine the DHCP address for the modem. For Windows 2000 or XP, this can be performed by:
Select “Run” from the “Start” menu
    Type “cmd”, then enter
At the DOS prompt, type “ipconfig/all”, then enter
Note the DHCP server address; this is the modem address
  • You will be prompted for your ISP username and password. Also, you need to select your preferred connection mode:
    Auto-Connect on Disconnect
    Connect on Demand
    Dial-up Mode
  • A “Congratulations” page will be displayed. Click “Finish”
  • Click on “Continue”
  • Type in username: admin, password: admin. Then, click “Log in”
  • Under the “Gateway Options”, click on the “ISP Connection” icon
  • On the bottom centre of the page, click “Advanced Settings”
  • Click “Configure the ATM Virtual Circuit”
  • Under the “VC” heading, click on 8/35
  • Click “Next”
  • Select protocol “PPPoE” and then click “Next” again
  • Under PPPoE Type, select “Bridge only” and then click “Next”
  • Click “Finish”
  • Click “Reboot”. A reboot is required before the new configuration takes effect, so click the "Reboot" icon, then click the additional "reboot" option that is displayed. DO NOT select the "Reset to factory defaults" option as this will remove all the configuration changes that have been made.

4200 Modem set-up:

  • Type the modem's URL into the internet browser (address bar in Internet Explorer), Note: You need to determine the DHCP server address for the modem. For Windows 2000 or XP, this can be performed by selecting “Run” from the “Start” menu:
    • type cmd, then enter
    • at the DOS prompt, type: ipconfig /all, then enter
    • note the DHCP server address. This is the modem address.
  • Click "Login" option. The "Username" is admin and the "Password" is admin. Then click "OK".
  • Click the "Setup" option and then click the "WAN interface" option.
  • If asked for a Username/Password use admin/admin
  • Click under VC heading the "8/35" option.
  • Click "Next>>"
  • The PPPoE option should be selected and then click "Next>>" again.
  • Under the heading "PPPoE Type" select the "Bridge only" option and then click "Next>>".

  • At the Network Connection Type screen, click “Connect to the Internet”
  • Select “Setup my connection manually”
  • Select “ Connect using a broadband connection that requires a user name and password”
  • @ the Connection Name Screen, type in BigPond where it asks for the ISP name
