Could you advise where I can purchase a Speedstream DSL modem.	Siemens does not distribute through retailers, but only distributes its modem in bundled packages through internet providers.
Can the range of the 6520 modem be extended?	No, the range is set to 30m.
Can I run digital devices such as cameras through modem directly?	No, this cannot be done unless the device is internet enabled (eg palm tops). You need to use a PC.
Can I configure the modem for a new provider?	You will need to contact your internet provider because each provider has its own IP specific setup options, eg protocol used and IP addresses.
I don't have an installation CD. Can I get a copy?	You will need to contact your internet provider because each provider has its own IP specific setup options, eg protocol used and IP addresses.
Can I use the modem with Apple computers?	This can be done but you need to refer to the user guide or contact an IT specialist company if you cannot understand the user guide.
Can I utilise an internal firewall?	Yes, please consult the manual or use an IT specialist.
Can the Siemens SpeedStream 6520 be used with the current card in my computer?	The Siemens 6520 supports the 802.11g and 802.11b standards, and will work with any wireless unit that supports those standards. Please refer to the handbook for your card to determine if it complies with these standards.

Technical Set-up

Instructions for setting Modems to Bridge Mode
Please note: the Telstra self install kit does not support the following setup. Hence, modems set back to factory default settings will destroy the settings below.

In its current configuration set up for BigPond, the SpeedStream modem is not set up to host other servers on the user LAN side. To enable this feature, the PPPoE termination will need to be on the PC rather than the modem.

Instructions for making the necessary changes are set out below:

6520 Modem set-up:

PC setup for running PPPoE (for Windows):

• Go to the Control Panel from the Start Menu
• Click Network Connections
• Under the Wizard heading – click "New Connection Wizard"
• At the Network Connection Type screen, click "Connect to the Internet"
• Select "Setup my connection manually"
• Select " Connect using a broadband connection that requires a user name and password"
• @ the Connection Name Screen, type in BigPond where it asks for the ISP name
• @ the Connection Availability screen select "Anyones Use"
• @ Internet Account Information screen, enter your user name and details and ensure both of the check boxes, are ticked ie for
  • "use this account name and password when anyone anyone connects to the internet from this computer", and
  • "make this the default internet connection".
• @ the Completion of New Connection Wizard, tick "add a shortcut to this connection to my desktop".

To go online, every time you wish to connect, double click the BigPond icon, enter your user name and password and click "connect".

Resetting modem to Factory Defaults

Resetting the modem may be required if you have changed the modem’s settings and wish to reset it to the factory default configuration.

Note: Resetting the modem will wipe all previous configurations and you will need to re-enter your provider account details. This can be simplified by using the Self Installation Kit CD from your provider.

4200 Modem

1. Using the tip of a ballpoint pen or unfolded paperclip, press and hold the Reset button located on the bottom of the router. The pwr LED will blink red once, indicating that the reset has begun.
2. Continue depressing the Reset button for four seconds or until the pwr LED begins to blink alternating red-to-green.
3. Release the Reset button.

6520 Modem

1. Turn the modem on. Wait until the modem has stopped booting up and the power light goes solid green.
2. Insert a small tipped object (pen tip or a pin will do) into the hole at the bottom of the modem labelled ‘reset’. You may need to hold this in for a couple of seconds before the reset is initiated. You will know when to let go of the reset hole when the power light starts blinking red/green. Remove the small tipped object. All the lights on the front on the modem should flash green and then red then the modem should start to boot as per normal.
3. Once the power light is on solid the modem should be restored to factory defaults.

Connecting a Router to the 4200 Modem

If connecting a router to the 4200, several issues may arise due to router configurations which prevent connectivity to the modem from the LAN. These problems should be overcome by ensuring:

1. the router WAN port DHCP is turned on, and
2. the router DHCP address space does not overlap with the 4200 modem DHCP address space.

Instructions for doing this are displayed below:

1. Router WAN port address issues: The 4200 modem in default mode will attempt to allocate an IP address to the equipment attached to it via DHCP. This means that if a router WAN port is connected to the 4200 then DHCP should be turned on on this port so it can be allocated a valid address. If DHCP cannot be turned on then set the IP address on this port to an address in the 10.0.0.0 network range (eg 10.0.0.100).
    
2. Overlapping address space: If the router is allocating IP addresses via DHCP in the same range as the 4200 allocations (ie. the 10.0.0.0 network) then problems may arise when connecting the router to the 4200 due to the overlapping IP address space. If this is the case, then reconfigure either the router (refer router manual) OR the modem (refer 4200 modem manual) to change the DHCP pool address space so that there is no overlap between the modem and the router.
